Bio
Best Bear is a Philadelphia based indie rock band formed in late 2019 and active since 2020. The band works within a slow burn post emo framework, with a sound often compared to The Beths, Sweet Pill, Hop Along, Snail Mail, and early Paramore, emphasizing dynamic pacing, emotional clarity, and carefully constructed songs.
Best Bear operates as a rotating collective of Philadelphia based musicians, with songs written by Blue Barnett forming the foundation across recordings and live shows, allowing the lineup to shift without changing the band’s core identity. The project has become a consistent presence in the local and regional music scene while maintaining a clear and recognizable sound.
In 2022, Best Bear released When, which gained attention from WXPN, Radio 104.5, and a range of regional and college radio stations. The song “Gaslighter” has received consistent airplay and remains in regular rotation. Best Bear is currently writing their second anticipated full length album, continuing to build on their songwriting with a focus on emotional directness and intention.
Best Bear has toured throughout the Northeast and Midwest and has performed at notable venues and showcases, with upcoming appearances including Pouzza Fest in Montreal. This past summer they performed as a main stage artist at Philly Pride 365, celebrating in big fashion their dedication and love for the LGBTQIA community that's been so supportive of this group. Their live sets prioritize focus and connection, balancing restraint and release while remaining grounded in the songs themselves.
Press Quotes
“Best Bear’s remarkably catchy acoustic song ‘Fireworks’ captured our attention.”
— WXPN, 24 Hour Song Challenge
“Best Bear delivered a set that built patiently and deliberately, rewarding listeners with strong melodies and memorable moments.”
— That Music Magazine
“Singer-guitarist Blue was a force on the Philly indie scene while their band Best Bear was still in the idea stage. You could catch them in the crowd, smiling and singing along, or collaborating with friends and peers on Instagram videos, building community at the gig and online. It set a perfect stage for Best Bear’s touchdown, which we can date approximately to their spring 2020 singles “T.M.W.Y.” and “Through The Static,” but more specifically to Saturday, June 5th of 2021 — aka West Philly Porchfest, when the band played a stellar set during a stacked show at 50th and Osage.
It proved that not only was Blue (and their band) a positive force behind the scenes, they were a positive force onstage too. Rounded out by guitarist / vocalist Gwen McFadden, bassist Storm Paul, and drummer Charles D’Ardenne, Best Bear makes heartfelt indie rock in the orbit of Waxahatchee, Soccer Mommy, Hop Along and Sadurn; it’s about heartache and the search for happiness, it’s about being your most authentic self, whatever that means to you.
Their song “Eleventh Grade,” which they delivered a stellar performance of in the Key Studio Sessions this week, contains what might be their mission statement of inclusivity, compassion, and self-love: “Be queer. Be gay. Fuck what anybody has to say. Be trans, nonbinary, whatever’s gonna make you happy. Your truth is gonna set you free.””
